Westone RH1 Custom Racing Earbuds for Clearer Track Communication

Clear communication with the crew is important when you are behind the wheel of a race car. Between engine noise, wind, vibration and the intensity of a race environment, a standard earpiece may not provide the fit or clarity a driver needs.

The Westone RH1 custom racing earbuds have been one of the most useful upgrades I have made to my driving gear. Their custom-molded fit helps reduce outside noise while allowing me to hear crew communication clearly without needing excessive volume.

Why Custom Racing Earbuds Matter

A race car is an extremely noisy environment.

Drivers need to hear instructions from the crew while staying focused on braking points, traffic, vehicle feedback and race strategy. A poorly fitting earpiece can make communication harder, especially when engine and wind noise begin competing with the radio.

Custom racing earbuds are molded specifically to the driver’s ears, creating a more secure fit than a typical universal earbud.

For me, that fit has made a noticeable difference in both comfort and communication.

My Experience With the Westone RH1

The biggest improvement I noticed with the Westone RH1 racing earbuds was how well the custom fit reduced unwanted engine noise.

Because the earpieces seal more effectively in the ear, I can hear radio communication at a lower volume than I would normally need with a basic earpiece.

That makes longer sessions more comfortable and allows me to concentrate on the information coming from the crew rather than fighting background noise.

Designed for Race Car Communication

Westone describes the RH1 as a custom racing headset designed primarily to allow race drivers to communicate with their pit crews. The RH1 uses a single balanced-armature driver, an 18-inch hardwired EPIC cable and a 3.5 mm mono plug compatible with many racing communication systems.

That simple, purpose-built design makes it well suited to an environment where reliable communication matters more than unnecessary complexity.

Custom Fit and Acoustic Seal

The custom fit is one of the most important parts of the system.

Westone’s custom-fit technology is based on impressions of the user’s ears, creating an earpiece designed around the individual ear shape. Westone says this approach is intended to improve comfort, fit and the acoustic seal compared with a generic earpiece.

For racing, that secure fit is particularly useful because the earpiece needs to remain comfortable underneath a helmet and stay in position throughout a session.

Lower Volume, Better Comfort

One of the benefits I appreciate most is being able to run the radio at a lower volume.

With less outside noise reaching the ear, the crew radio does not need to compete as aggressively with the sound of the car.

The result, in my experience, is a much more comfortable communication setup during longer track and race sessions.

An Upgrade Worth Considering for Racing Drivers

There are plenty of performance upgrades you can make to a race car, but driver equipment also has a major impact on the overall experience.

For me, the Westone RH1 has been a worthwhile improvement because it combines a custom fit with clear communication and better comfort inside the car.

If you are building or updating your racing communication setup, custom molded racing earbuds are worth considering alongside your helmet, radio and other driver equipment.

Driver Development Goes Beyond Equipment

Good equipment supports the driver, but technique, racecraft and preparation still matter every time you go on track.
